The new routemaster

Boris Johnson has unveiled the newly designed routemaster bus in London today.

The new design is set to replace the old model and will be launched in 2012 in time for the Olympic games.

It is a much improved version of the old model and uses all the latest green technology. The bus is built with the commuter in mind, there will be two staircases leading to the top deck and three doors on and off the bus.

The bus was co designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick alongside the bus company ‘The Wright Group.’

Rage to play free gig

Rage Against The Machine have kept their promise to fans and will play a free gig in London this summer.

The American band beat X-Factor winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas number one spot last year and promised to reward fans for their loyalty and support. The reward will come in the form of a free gig in Finsbury Park this June. The news was announced when the band were guests on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show.

Tickets will be issued via a balloting system. If you fancy going to the show on Sunday 6th June, you need to register on the band’s website by the 14th February – so get your skates on!

The concert will also include a full supporting bill and promises to be one of the most talked about music events of the summer.

RIP Alexander McQueen

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead in his London apartment.

The British designer was found this morning. Paramedics were called to the scene but could do nothing, McQueen was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports are circulating that the 40 year old committed suicide but the police are refusing to confirm this statement.

McQueen was one of Britain’s most famed designers and won numerous awards throughout his career. His brand ‘Alexander McQueen’ was partly acquired by Gucci in 2000, spreading his name even further.

His death comes just before London fashion week and the unveiling of his new collection.

The fashion industry has lost a true gem.

Police cuts in London

Funding for the Metropolitan Police is to be cut in 2010-2011.

London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that just 16 million pounds of council tax money will be spent on policing the capital, 2.48% less than last year. The number of police officers will also be reduced by 455 in the coming three years. This seems to contradict the current advert below that is currently running on our television screens informing us that there will be more police officers on the streets.

Policing pledge

Although the mayor is claiming the cuts won’t have a detrimental consequences for our city, it is hard to see how such a cut cannot have a negative influence. As students we are famed for not leaving clubs and pubs until the early hours and we want to feel safe when doing so. How do you think the cuts will affect London? Let us know!

I-D cards hit London

I-D cards will be available for all young people aged 16-24 in London from 8 February.

The national I-D cards which are already being tried out in Manchester will be available for young people next month but everyone else will have to wait until 2012. The card will cost £30 and could be used as proof of age when buying alcohol, cigarettes and when going into a club. It would also replace a passport when traveling around Europe.

Although there has been much controversy around the introduction of the I-D card and the ‘Big Brother’ society it creates, it is a lot more convenient than carrying around a passport which currently costs £77 to replace should you lose it. And, let’s face it, students losing their passports on a night out isn’t unheard of.

However, many MPs are still claiming the whole scheme is ‘pointless.’

Would you strip if you didn’t get your loan?

Students are going into the stripping business to help pay for their fees and living costs because they have not received their student loans.

One student has already admitted to becoming a stripper to pay off the debts she has incurred due to her lack of funds. Smoke Radio can confirm that the student is not from the University of Westminster but is studying in London. She said that she had borrowed so much money off friends and family, she needs to pay them back and being the only one in her family to go to university, dropping out for a year is not an option. She did not want to disappoint anyone.

The 20 year-old will go to Leeds this week to work in a strip club. She said she is doing it because her rent is due and she has no money to pay for it.

The student, who can not be named used to live in Leeds before she started university and knows the strip club and some of its workers. She has not told her family what she is planning on doing and does not intend to.

The student applied for her loan way back in May and did not think anything more about it until August. Now she does not think that she will get her money until after Christmas. Thousands of other students have been caught up in the delays with the Student Loans Company (SLC) and the government is looking into the problem. A report is expected to be published before Christmas.

Smoke would like to know your stories concerning student loans. Have you got yours yet? How have you been managing without a loan? Would you do something like the student in this story? What do you think about what she is doing? Let us know.

London lights up

Regent and Oxford street were lit up today by the stars of Disney’s latest film, ‘A Christmas Carol.’

The Christmas lights were turned on simultaneously by Jim Carey and Colin Firth at 6.15 this evening before the UK Premiere of the movie.

Going to university in the capital city means you have no excuse not to get down and admire this year’s lighting extravaganza! Those of you lucky enough to study at the Regent Street site will get to see them every day.

The lights will remain up until January 6th 2010 so get yourselves down there!
