Chelsea dumped out of Champions League
Mar 17th
Inter Milan beat Chelsea 1-0 last night to dump the English side out of the Champions League.
Milan were already 2-1 up from the first leg but a goal from Samuel Eto’o in the 78th minute put the tie beyond any doubt. To rub salt into Chelsea wounds, Didier Drogba managed to get himself sent off for violent conduct in the closing stages of the game.
The 1-0 victory means Jose Mourinho can still boast an unbeaten record at Stamford Bridge. ‘The Special One’ never lost a game at The Bridge whilst in charge of The Blues and this was extended even as an opposition manager last night.
The draw for the quarter finals will be made on Friday. In past years all 4 English clubs have made it through to this stage but this year it is just Arsenal and Manchester United representing the Premier League.

David Beckham is back in town. However this time he is wearing the colours of AC Milan.
With Arsenal cruising to a 5-0 victory against Porto yesterday evening, all eyes are now on Manchester United and David Beckham’s return. The England midfielder is back at Old Trafford this evening with current club AC Milan looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg of the Champions League tie.
The Italian club need to score at least twice to have a hope of eliminating United from the competition. If they manage the task it will be the first time in history that United have squandered an away advantage in Europe. However, Milan will hope they can repeat the heroics of 2007 when they defeated their English opponents 3-0 at the San Siro.
Wayne Rooney is back for United after being an injury doubt but they are missing Wes Brown, Ryan Giggs and Micheal Carrick.
With the Italian team packed with talent, Beckham is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup. However, with the heroic reception he received at Manchester airport, should he make it on to the pitch he will undoubtedly be met with rapturous applause.

Yesterday evening saw evening saw Chelsea qualify for the last 16 despite being held by a 2-2 draw by Athletico Madrid in Spain. Chelsea thought they had the match won when Didier Drogba scored two goals in the final eight minutes, canceling out Sergia Aguero’s earlier volley. You would have thought a team of Chelsea’s stature would be able to see out the final few minutes but they needlessly gave away a free kick which Aguero came back to the haunt them and converted the free kick.
Despite the disappointment, Chelsea are still safely through to the next stage and can turn their attention to the weekend showdown with title rivals Manchester United.
Manchester United were also involved in a thrilling 3-3 at Old Trafford with CSKA Moscow, however this time an English team

were on the right end of an injury time equaliser. CSKA were moments away from earning three points at the fortress that is Old Trafford but Valencia’s deflected shot in injury time earned United a point which, like Chelsea, was enough to see them through to the final 16.
Michael Owen had put United ahead on the half hour before three consecutive goals from the Russians. A shock result looked on the cards until the 84th minute when Champions League veteran Paul Scholes got a goal back and then heart breakingly for CSKA an own goal from Shchennikov (try saying that after a few bevvies down the SU!) in the 93rd minute.
Today saw Liverpool and Arsenal in action hoping to emulate the success of Chelsea and Manchester United.

Liverpool travelled to Lyon in what was a must win game for the Merseysiders … so the 1-1 draw they got wasn’t an ideal result. Ryan Babel scored what he thought was a vital winner in the 83rd minute but Liverpool suffered the same fate as Chelsea and conceded an injury time equaliser to Lisandro Lopez which will pile on even more pressure to Rafa Benitez.
Liverpool need Lyon to beat Fiorentina in the next game to stand any hope of qualifying. Liverpool’s last match is at home to the Italian team in what could be a crunch match.
Arsenal were the only one of four English clubs to get all three points and they did it in some style beating Dutch champions AZ
Alkmaar 4-1. Goals from Samir Nasri, Abou Diaby and a brace from Cesc Fabregas saw off Alkmaar and their consolation goal did nothing to dampen spirits in North London. This result surely makes up for the disappointing 1-1 draw in Holland.
As Standard Liege beat Olympiacos, Arsenal have not yet officially qualified for the next stage. However, they need just a point from their next match when Liege visit the Emirates Stadium.
