Clegg & Cameron Unite!

It has been a week now since the general election, which saw Britain left with a hung parliament for the first time since 1974, as no party claimed an overall majority of the vote.

Since last Thursday, major changes have occured in our government, with the nation waving Labour’s Gordon Brown out of Downing Street and applauding the duo of David Cameron and Nick Clegg in. A previously unfathomable pairing, the leaders of the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats have formed what is known as a coalition government, meaning that the two parties have joined forces in order to gain a majority of the seats in Parliament.

With Cameron as our new Prime Minister and Clegg as his deputy, the partnership seems an unlikely one and the press have likened the duo to all sorts, including Morecambe and Wise, or Ant and Dec! However, whilst the initial back patting and friendly banter between the two leaders is all very well, we have to question what this means for the country.

These two men were seemingly at opposite ends of the spectrum just a week ago, with Cameron describing Nick Clegg as  his favourite joke, suggesting that for the Conservatives, the Lib Dems are just a means to an end. For with Cameron in place as PM, many speculate that another general election is not far away, some even claiming it to be less than a year from now. This would supposedly see the end of the coalition, with perhaps the Conservatives most likely to take a majority vote, providing Cameron doesn’t have a catastrophic first year as PM.

However, for now, the cynicism most view this coalition with must be set aside. Cameron and Clegg have promised 5 years of this ‘new politics’ and the new cabinet ministers provide a spattering of places for Lib Dem MPs, including Vince Cable, who achieved a somewhat cult like status during the election campaign. Yet with dissent being reported amongst the ranks of Conservative back bench politicians already, the nation watches and waits to see just how this double act pans out.

Europa League Heartache

A ‘bitter blow’ was how Fulham boss Roy Hodgson described his sides extra-time defeat to Athletico Madrid in the Europa League cup final last night.

The stage was set in Hamburg for one of the most unlikely stories of the footballing season, as Fulham, a relative unknown on the European scene, were looking to cause a massive upset by defeating Spain’s Athletico Madrid in bid to secure the Europa League crown.

The match had been tightly contested, with neither side really dominating play for any extended period. However, it was Madrid who struck first through Forlan on 32 minutes to give his side the upper hand. Yet, far from winded, Fulham responded emphatically within 5 minutes, as Simon Davies crashed home a volley to equalise and send the London contingent into raptures.

Unfortunately, the fairytale was not to come true and after a gruelling 116 minutes of play, Diego Forlan scored his second of the night to end the West London club’s hopes and dreams. Leaving fans, including Lily Allen, in tears, the ex-Manchester United player lifted what some had believed to be a curse on Athletico Madrid, having unluckily lost in several European finals previous.

Failing to become the first English manager to win a European trophy since the late Sir Bobby Robson in 1997, Hodgson praised his squad of unlikely heroes, including Londoners such as Paul Konchesky and Bobby Zamora, stating “I could not be more proud of the players.”

Yet, whilst the night ended bitterly for Fulham fans, this will certainly be a season to remember. Overcoming last year’s champions Shakhtar Donetsk, Italian giants Juventus and German champions Wolfsburg, Fulham can be overjoyed with their success this season.

Along the way Bobby Zamora made a case for his inclusion in Capello’s England squad, Clint Dempsey showed us why we may not take a victory of the USA in South Africa for granted and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, took his place at the top of the list of Premier League stoppers.

FINAL SCORE:

ATHLETICO MADRID 2 (Forlan 32, 116)

FULHAM 1  (Davies  37)
