Save BBC 6Music

The BBC have announced budget cuts that may force the closure of BBC 6Music and the Asian Network.

6 Music has somewhat of a cult following and has become a major force in playing new and alternative bands that many commercial stations would never play. The Asian Network also has a major following, particularly in places such as Leicester where there are large Asian communities.

The cuts come amid claims that the BBC have become too big and that commercial radio has suffered as a consequence. However, fans of 6Music and many in the industry mean axing the station would do a disservice to true music lovers and would leave a hole that commercial radio could simply not fill.

If you want to get involved in the campaign to save 6Music – add a ‘twibbon’ to your Twitter picture to show your support!

Wayne burns his bridges

Wayne Bridge has announced he is making himself unavailable to England manager Fabio Capello.

Following the recent John Terry scandal, much speculation has been doing the rounds as to whether it would be possible for the two players to play together for England.

With Ashley Cole out with a long term injury, it was thought that Wayne Bridge would play a large part in the up and coming World Cup. However, with this announcement Capello now has a bit of a headache as to who to deploy at left back.

Despite Terry being stripped of the England captaincy, it appears that it is Bridge whose England career has truly suffered from John Terry’s lack of control.

NME award winners

Last night saw Brixton Academy play host to the NME awards.

Jarvis Cocker hosted the event which included performances from Paul Weller, The Maccabees and some unique collaborations from Lily Allen and The Big Pink and Biffy Clyro and Marina and the Diamonds.

Best looking male?

Best looking male?

Muse had a particularly good evening winning best website for Muse.mu beating off competition from the likes of YouTube and Twitter. They also picked up the prestigious best band award, pipping Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys to the gong. However perhaps the most important award won by the band was best looking male which went to Matt Bellamy. Errr…..

It wasn’t such a good evening for the Jonas Brothers who managed to pick up both worst band and worst album for ‘Lines, Vines and Trying Times.’ Shockingly the band were not in attendance.

You can check out the full list of winners here which include Jamie T winning best solo artist and Smoke Radio favourite’s Bombay Bicycle Club winning best newcomer.

Fancy a laugh?

CherylJT

The news every man has been waiting for …

… Cheryl Cole has finally ditched Ashley.

Cheryl and Ashley: No more

Cheryl and Ashley: No more

It had been on the cards for some time but today it is official. Cheryl Cole is now a single lady according to her official spokesperson.

Rumours were flying last week when Cheryl performed at the Brit awards minus her wedding ring and there were stories in the press this morning claiming that Cheryl had spent the evening with one of her dancers.

Cheryl has asked for the press to respect her privacy during this ‘difficult’ time.

It is hard to say that Ashley Cole didn’t have this coming. What man would really be stupid enough to cheat on Cheryl 5 times? Oh wait … the Chelsea left back. It seems the Chelsea defence are having problems keeping their trousers on of late.

It’s Spanish night senors and senoritas

Stacey dunnit!

One of the biggest secrets in television history was finally revealed on Friday night – Stacey Slater killed Archie.

The Eastender’s plot writers managed to keep the killer’s identity a secret right up until the episode went live at 8pm on Friday. Whilst most people had their money on Jack or Bradley (including Smoke!) it was Stacey Slater who committed the dirty deed. Actress Lacey Turner was in shock herself that she was the secret killer all this time.

However that was not the only shock of the evening. Everyone’s favourite strawberry blonde (aka ginger) character, Bradley Branning left the show with some what of a bang … jumping off a building.

If you haven’t seen the live episode, you can catch it on iplayer now.

AGM aftermath

Yesterday afternoon’s UWSU AGM was one of the most successful and well attended in recent times.

All four sabbatical officers were given the chance to explain what had been happening in their various areas over the course of the year and were open to questions from the students in attendance.

The three motions put forwarded included the temporary restructure of the SU, the decision on whether or not to adhere to the NUS no platform policy and whether there was adequate support for the ‘fight against cuts at Westminster’ campaign. Needless to say there was plenty of support and applause for the final motion, however the restructuring of the union was not so well received by some of the students.

Keep your eyes on the Smoke Radio website for interviews and podcasts from the event.

UWSU AGM: This afternoon

The Student Union’s AGM takes place in at the Harrow campus this afternoon.

There is a free buffet from 2.30pm and the actual meeting kicks off at 3pm in the auditorium, on the Harrow Street.

For students coming from our central sites, just hop on the Metropolitan Line and head up to Northwick Park.

It’s important as many students turn up as possible as this meeting could influence the way our SU in run. The SU represents us as students so it is vital we air our views on the way it works.

If you really can’t get to Harrow this afternoon, you can listen to the whole thing live on Smoke Radio.
