University break in

Yesterday night the Harrow campus was victim to a break in which resulted in equipment from the Journalism and Graphics department being stolen.

Whilst the party was in full swing at Area 51, the newsrooms and graphic design area on the 2nd floor of ‘J’ Block were the target of a break in.

One Mac was stole from the newsroom and some general damage was done to the room. There was also equipment taken from graphics, just down the corridor. NR2 was out of action all day today, disrupting Journalism students who normally use the facilities.

As the area is currently a crime scene, lecturers are unsure if the room will be available for tomorrow’s lessons.

All the information is on the Apple website and the ipad does look very impressive. However, is it really necessary? Will any of you be purchasing the latest device? Let Smoke know what you think.

Big Brother’s big news

cbbA new celebrity is due to enter the Big Brother house during tonight’s eviction.

People such as Boy George, Katie Price, Pamela Anderson and MC Hammer have all been rumoured to be entering the house, just 2 days before the final on Friday.

However, the main rumour circulating is that the show’s host Davina McCall will enter the house, dressed in an animal costume. Channel 4 have refused to confirm but with this being the last ever series, it would be an ideal way to the mark the ending of Celebrity Big Brother.

Tonight will see two celebrities get the boot from the house. The bookies favourites to leave are Stephanie and Ivana, with Alex Reid being the favourite to win. Who would have though that at the beginning of the series?!

Coming out … of the recession!

The UK economy is finally emerging from its recent downturn.

Figures have just been released that show in the last three months of 2009 our economy grew by 0.1%. This may be smaller than the estimated growth but it is the first sign of improvement and things are looking up.

Britain are behind the likes of Germany and France who began to show signs of growth during the summer of 2009. This has had an impact on the strength of the pound and exchange rates are still poor.

However, with the economy on the up, things are looking up for us students. Graduates should find it progressively easier to find jobs as companies look to expand.

I-D cards hit London

I-D cards will be available for all young people aged 16-24 in London from 8 February.

The national I-D cards which are already being tried out in Manchester will be available for young people next month but everyone else will have to wait until 2012. The card will cost £30 and could be used as proof of age when buying alcohol, cigarettes and when going into a club. It would also replace a passport when traveling around Europe.

Although there has been much controversy around the introduction of the I-D card and the ‘Big Brother’ society it creates, it is a lot more convenient than carrying around a passport which currently costs £77 to replace should you lose it. And, let’s face it, students losing their passports on a night out isn’t unheard of.

However, many MPs are still claiming the whole scheme is ‘pointless.’
