The latest Youtube sensation

Greyson Chance has become the latest Youtube sensation.

The 12 year old has had over 15 million people logging on to check out his performance of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ at his school festival.

Greyson has become such a star that he even performed on the Ellen Degeneres show in America, receiving a phonecall from Gaga herself.

Could he be the new Justin Bieber?!

Glasto line up revealed

After months of speculation, the Glastonbury line up has FINALLY been revealed.

We all knew that U2, Muse and Stevie Wonder were headlining the Pyramid stage, but who would be performing alongside them was the question on everybody’s lips.

We here at Smoke Radio think the line up is pretty immense and with more artist still to be announced, it is only going to get better. Take a look at the East Dance stage on the Saturday and you should recognise Donaeo – yes he did play at Area 51 last semester.

If you are going to Glastonbury let us know who you’re most looking forward to seeing!

JLS Set To Rubber Up

In a bizarre turn of events, chart toppers JLS are set to lead the campaign for safer sex by bringing out their own range of condoms. Rumoured to be called Just Love Safe, using their trademark initials, the foursome are keen to spread the message of safe sex to their teenage audience.

JLS ready to Just Love Safe

When talking about the issue of condoms, backflippin’ Aston Merrygold said ‘My mum sends me down a stash [of condoms] and I dish them out to the lads so none of us have to worry.’ Indeed, the production of these new brand of JLS rubber rings would save Aston’s mother a job and provide the lads with contraception tools to match their set colours, or maybe they could even mix and match!

This is not the first time we’ve seen a popular group get involved with the increasingly urbanised campaign for safer sex, as N Dubz recently released a song called ‘Shoulda Put Something On’, not to mention Dappy’s endless safer sex advertising by wearing a condom on his head!

However, with a popular boy band putting their name to such a mature product, it surely raises the question of where will branding and advertising stop? By producing condoms, yes the band will be opening the eyes of many teens to the idea of safe sex, but they’ll also be opening the eyes of many pre-teens to sex itself. Will sex then become a market saturated by teen brands? Will we soon see Barbie Doll condom machines popping up in gents toilets all over the country? The ultimate question, therefore, seems to be whether this JLS condom will eventually do more bad than it’s intended good? I guess that’s just something we will have to wait to find out.

NME award winners

Last night saw Brixton Academy play host to the NME awards.

Jarvis Cocker hosted the event which included performances from Paul Weller, The Maccabees and some unique collaborations from Lily Allen and The Big Pink and Biffy Clyro and Marina and the Diamonds.

Best looking male?

Muse had a particularly good evening winning best website for Muse.mu beating off competition from the likes of YouTube and Twitter. They also picked up the prestigious best band award, pipping Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys to the gong. However perhaps the most important award won by the band was best looking male which went to Matt Bellamy. Errr…..

It wasn’t such a good evening for the Jonas Brothers who managed to pick up both worst band and worst album for ‘Lines, Vines and Trying Times.’ Shockingly the band were not in attendance.

You can check out the full list of winners here which include Jamie T winning best solo artist and Smoke Radio favourite’s Bombay Bicycle Club winning best newcomer.

Brit Awards: Tonight!

Brit-Awards-2010

Not only is it pancake day, today also plays host to the Brit Awards.

The ceremony is being help at London’s Earl’s Court and promises to be an amazing evening with performances from Lily Allen, JLS, Kasabian and many more. The Brits wouldn’t be the Brits without a weird and wonderful duet and this year does not disappoint. Florence Welch and Dizzee Rascal will combine forces and the performance will later be available to download from Itunes.

It has already  been confirmed that Robbie Williams will take home the ‘outstanding contribution to music award.’ Florence and the Machine, Pixie Lott, JLS and Lily Allen are all nominated for three awards each and Jay-Z and Kasabian both have two nominations. Check out the full list of nominees here.

The Brits are live on ITV from 8pm this evening.

Rage to play free gig

Rage Against The Machine have kept their promise to fans and will play a free gig in London this summer.

The American band beat X-Factor winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas number one spot last year and promised to reward fans for their loyalty and support. The reward will come in the form of a free gig in Finsbury Park this June. The news was announced when the band were guests on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show.

Tickets will be issued via a balloting system. If you fancy going to the show on Sunday 6th June, you need to register on the band’s website by the 14th February – so get your skates on!

The concert will also include a full supporting bill and promises to be one of the most talked about music events of the summer.

Battery Powered – tonight!

The first Battery Powered event takes place at Area 51 this evening.

If you came down to Smoke Live before Christmas, make sure you head over to Area for more of the same, but bigger and better. There will be something for everyone as we’ve got live performances from bands, acoustic performers and MCs.

The event kicks off at 8.30 at Area and there is a special ‘Westminster’s Finest’ build up show on Smoke at 8. Entrance is just £1 – bargain.

If for some reason you can’t get down to Area (we hope you have a good excuse) you can listen to the whole thing live on Smoke Radio. We are too good to you.

See you there!

Glastonbury headliners

Michael Eavis has confirmed the remaining two artists that will be headlining Glastonbury 2010 and Smoke Radio are very excited.

U2 had already been confirmed to play the Friday night but Eavis revealed today that Muse and Stevie Wonder will be joining the Irish rockers at the festival.

Matt Bellamy and co will take to the stage on the Saturday whilst Stevie Wonder will close the festival on Sunday.

Jack Johnson has also confirmed that he will be playing on the Sunday and there are strong rumours that Dizzee Rascal, Hot Chip and Vampire Weekend will also be gracing the festival.
